Hackett London - Essential British Kit

Jeremy Hackett, Chairman and Co-Founder of Hackett
Hackett was founded by Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings on London’s Portobello Road in 1975 selling fine quality second-hand traditional British clothing and accessories. In 1983, they opened their first shop under the name “Hackett” at New Kings Road in Parson’s Green, London. As the supply of quality second-hand clothing is limited and unable to meet the market demand, Hackett started to manufacture garments by themselves. Hackett is very well-known as a British men’s wear brand from London and still stands for quintessential British style to this day.

Men Accessories

Hackett offers mostly formal wear and suits besides polo shirt, knitwear that ranges from men to kids wear and also accessories. Jeremy Hackett considers “Hackett” as a purveyor or brand that offers proper British Town & Country clothing where its style is inspired by Old England. Hackett is renowned of offering “the man’s uniform” (which includes tweed jackets, chalk stripe suit, morning coats, dinner jackets…) which are done well, as they emphasize on offering quality garments with good cuts and quality cloth. In short, Hackett’s philosophy is creating proper English/British clothes for men with great emphasis on its quality of cloth and its cuts rather than the continuous changes in fashion.

“Essential British Kit” is the perfect summation of everything that Hackett is about.

When they first started, Hackett attracted customers where they are the sons of men that had tailor made suits. The sons could not afford to have their suits made by tailors thus Hackett was where they could get clothes that are produced with a bespoke or tailor made look and with an English feel and most importantly they were affordable. Their customers are most likely to be in their mid-30’s, they would have the desire and appreciation towards the ‘British’ look, professional, working/business men and considerably wealthy.

As we stepped into the Hackett London store located in KLCC, the colours of the new arrivals that they had in-store were mainly dark red or maroon, heather grey and dark blue for the suits section. As for the new arrived polo shirts, the key colours were cobalt blue and bright red with white and grey complementing the main colours. Overall, the clothing that they had in-store are different tones of blue, red, black, grey and white. The suits were tapered with fitted cuts as the polo shirts were more loosely fitted. They also had accessories which includes caps, bags, ties, and other essential men accessories.

Their store exterior and interior were extremely well designed and amazing which matches their brand’s philosophy of the old classic British/English Style. Main colours of the store were Black and white where they have white painted walls, black curtains, black and white vintage pictures hanged on the walls which makes it look classy and elegant. They had very wide glass windows, shiny marble flooring, glass display selves where small items lie ties and other accessories were placed and white and bright lights. The reflective surfaces of the glass and marble flooring  together with the bright lighting made the store look spacious, shiny, high class and sophisticated. They also had classic lamps on the wall and door holders shaped like an umbrella which I find very interesting and greatly shows how they never overlook on small details.

Besides, they had wooden selves to showcase their clothing where some were folded and hanged in the wooden selves. Suit cases and old books were placed at the top and bottom of the wooden selves which further accentuates the old and classic London and British style. At the suit section, they had a glass coffee table, two one-seater leather chair, a standing lamp and a khaki-coloured carpet. The atmosphere looked like an office, brightly lighted, very professional, neat and tidy.

To sum up, Hackett is a brand that is strongly influenced by the old and classic British and English style where they offer clothes that ranges from formal wear and suits to sporty polo shirts for men that appreciates British styles and seeking for the 'gentlemen' look.

  1. Well written, Melanie.

Just for further reading.. Hackett's core design inspirations, what you mentioned about "Old and classic English Gentleman look" is actually known as the English Dandy, a culture observed in the late 19th Century where certain men places high importance on their appearance and dressing.

Dandies typically carries a walking stick and wears a top hat, hence why Hackett's logo has these two elements.
